Title SsangYong signed MOU with Korea Automotive Technology Institute for development of self-driving car

SsangYong Motor Company (CEO Yoo-il Lee;http://www.kg-mobility.com/en) signed MOU (Memorandum Of Understanding) with KATECH (Korea Automotive Technology Institute, President Kyung Huh) on mutual cooperation to develop a self-driving car.


The agreement ceremony was held at the headquarters of KATECH, Cheonan on June 24, 2014, joined by Su-won Lee, Executive Managing Director of Vehicle Development center, Seon-Kyung Kim, Managing Director of electric R&D of SsangYong Motor, Kyung Huh, President of KATECH, Jae-Kwan Lee, Head of Intelligent Vehicle Technology R&D Div., and other representatives.


Through the agreement between SsangYong Motor and KATECH, both parties intends to process with ▲ Advance R&D on human-friendly driverless car based on vehicle-IT fusion technology ▲Cooperation on patent and technology preemption through intensive support for the core technology, and ▲ Synergy maximization by sharing human resources and research facilities.


Especially, SsangYong expects that the deal could develop core technology and boost the engineering capability for self-driving vehicle system.


Self-driving system, which currently plays a limited assistant role, ultimately aims to enable drive enter the destination and sit back. Global automakers plan to commercialize the self-driving car by 2020.

“With growing demand for the safety and driving convenience, the self-driving system has emerged as one of core competences for future automobile industry” said Jae-wan Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Technology & Product Development G.HQ of SsangYong Motor Company. “Through cooperation with KATECH, SsangYong will prepare for future growth engines of SsangYong Motor Company by developing core technology and strengthening the engineering capability for the self-driving system.”
