SsangYong Motor Company (CEO Johng-sik Choi; www.smotor.com/en) announced that it sold a total of 11,421 units in August 2018 – 9,055 units in domestic sales and 2,366 in exports.
SsangYong's August sales slightly dropped 2.6 percent year-on-year despite shrinking exports, helped by strong sales of the Rexton Sports (export: Musso) in the domestic market.
SsangYong's domestic sales were up 9.7 percent over August 2017, exceeding 9,000 units for four consecutive months since May. This growth was attributed to the production increase of Musso based on two consecutive day shifts.
On an accumulated basis, its domestic sales maintained the same performance during the same period last year and are expected to grow positively for the ninth straight year. In 2017, the company posted best-ever domestic sales at home in 14 years, and recorded a growth for eight consecutive years.
Furthermore, the company plans to implement another two consecutive day shifts (8 hrs + 8 hrs) in the middle of September to secure additional production capacity. It will help Musso's backorders resolved and the entire sales increase.
SsangYong's August exports plunged 31.8 percent from a year earlier, but the company will gear up to expand its exports in the second half this year by focusing on the Rexton brands (Rexton & Musso).
Musso, which has launched in the European market in July, will be introduced to the Central and South America such as Chile and Ecuador in September.
Johng-sik Choi, CEO of SsangYong Motor Company, commented, "There is a high possibility that we achieve the domestic sales growth for the ninth straight year thanks to the strong sales of Musso," adding, "We will make the utmost effort to expand global sales by resolving backorders based on the effective production system."
